Cool and Affordable at GWD 2025

Five timepieces proving quality doesn't require mega budgets

Geneva Watch Days 2025 proved that merit in watchmaking doesn’t always command eye-watering prices. From perpetual calendars under £10,000 to innovative dial artistry and aerospace-grade materials, several brands demonstrated that accessible pricing can coexist with genuine horological value. Here are five timepieces selected by our Editor-in-Chief for delivering remarkable quality without compromising on craftsmanship or creativity.

FREDERIQUE CONSTANT CLASSIC PERPETUAL CALENDAR MANUFACTURE

Frederique Constant has unveiled three new iterations of its acclaimed Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture, reinforcing its position as purveyor of the market’s most accessible perpetual calendar complication. The updated FC-776 calibre now delivers an impressive 72-hour power reserve, nearly doubling the previous 38 hours whilst maintaining the sub-£10,000 price point (except for the yellow gold version featured below, which retails at £27,295).

Two steel variants feature blue or silvered sunray dials, whilst a limited gold edition of just 37 pieces showcases a striking black onyx dial against warm 18kt yellow gold. All retain the intuitive 40mm case size and user-friendly adjustment system via recessed pushers. The Geneva manufacture continues demonstrating that haute horlogerie complications needn’t command stratospheric prices, making perpetual calendar ownership achievable for all collectors. LOUIS ERARD X WIRE ART – FIL D’OR

The result of a clever collaboration between Louis Erad and engineers Sylvie Villa and Mark Miehlbradt, Fil d’Or features a dial constructed from 2,320 threads of 24kt gold wire, each just 25 microns thick – three times thinner than human hair. The engineers converted obsolete microchip bonding machines to place each wire individually with 3,660 micro-solder points, creating Louis Erard’s signature cube pattern on a black lacquered base. The process takes 45 minutes per dial, with one wire positioned every three seconds under binocular magnification. The ultra-fine gold threads form a geometric trompe-l’œil effect that shifts with light, anchored in laser-engraved micro-cavities filled through electroplating.

Housed in a 39mm stainless steel case with rhodium-plated hands and beige leather strap, this technique transforms discarded industrial equipment into a new form of micromechanical embroidery, limited to 99 pieces at just CHF4,500 + taxes. Find out more, HERE.

ORIS X BAMFORD WATCH DEPARTMENT PROPILOT ALTIMETER ‘MISSION CONTROL’

This collaboration delivers the world’s only timepiece combining a Swiss automatic mechanical movement with a functional mechanical altimeter measuring altitude up to 19,700 feet. The watch features Bamford’s space-themed aesthetic with bright yellow, lime, and red accents against a black dial, housed in a revolutionary carbon-fibre composite case using 9T Labs’ additive manufacturing technique that’s lighter than titanium yet stronger than steel.

The technical foundation centres on the Oris Calibre 793 automatic movement with 56-hour power reserve and patented dual-dial system separating the altimeter from the automatic rotor. The carbon-fibre case uses PEKK polymer composite technology from aerospace applications, creating unique tree-ring visual patterns whilst reducing weight significantly. Limited to 250 pieces with dual crowns for time setting and altimeter calibration, the watch retails for CHF6,700 (approx. £6,220). Further details, HERE.

MICROMILSPEC PILOT WORLDTIMER

Norwegian brand Micromilspec has unveiled two new Pilot Worldtimer models at Geneva Watch Days, marking its expansion into aviation-inspired horology. The titanium-cased timepieces feature chronograph functionality, GMT hand, and worldtimer display with ceramic bezel inserts available in black or white dial configurations.

MICROMILSPEC PILOT WORLDTIMER

Powered by the La Joux-Perret L122 manufacture movement, these tool watches reflect Micromilspec’s military heritage – having previously created bespoke pieces for the Royal Norwegian Air Force and NATO’s AWACS programme. Limited to 75 pieces each at €3,500 (approx. £3,035), the Worldtimer celebrates the brand’s growing international presence whilst establishing the Pilot Collection as a permanent fixture. The launches demonstrate Micromilspec’s evolution from military contractor to serious civilian watchmaker targeting professionals and collectors alike. More details, HERE.

ALPINA SEASTRONG DIVER EXTREME AUTOMATIC

Alpina is making the most of the Geneva Watch Days to present two new timepieces with a nautical feel – ideal to keep that summer holiday feeling alive. The Seastrong Diver Extreme Automatic range, already a pillar of the Seastrong collection, now includes two new variations.

The first goes for a vintage look with the hour markers, minute circle and hand tips on the customary black dial done out in ‘old radium’, a luminous colour typical of the 1920s and 30s, while the second sports a khaki dial that adds a more robust, overland adventure feel while losing nothing of the seafaring ethos. Both models retain the 39mm steel case mounted on a rubber strap and are powered by an automatic movement. Explore the collection, HERE.
