Beaches, lagoons and reefs

A winter escapade to Mauritius

Instead of spending winter freezing in cold latitudes, it is becoming increasingly popular to sneak away to a tropical destination for a week or two… especially over half term, so the whole family can enjoy a bit of winter sun instead and swap the sideline of a water-logged football pitch on a Saturday morning for a sun lounger overlooking a crystal-clear ocean.

The Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa in Mauritius is a perfect choice for this purpose. Their 27 luxurious two and three-bedroom pool villas are fully equipped – including butler service – inviting guests to discover a world dedicated to tropical elegance with access to all the facilities in the resort, from its six restaurants to several complimentary water sports, kids and teens club.

Trou aux Biches is located on the northwest of the island, which makes it an ideal location to enjoy dream-like sunsets.

Located on the sunniest coast of Mauritius on the northwest of the island, Trou aux Biches Beachcomber, with 35 hectares of tropical gardens, nearly two kilometres of white sandy beach and a turquoise lagoon, provides the perfect setting for a family looking for an action-packed holiday and some relaxation time. Because of its west-facing location, the sunsets are incredible.

The villas are exquisite. Whether you choose the two or three-bedroom option, all of them have luxuries like an outdoor shower and outdoor deep-soak bathtub shaded by a gazebo, state-of-the-art TV and sound system, private infinity pool and garden… and things like laundry, ironing, etc can be organised by your butler or the concierge. They can even bring a chef to cook for you for an unforgettable experience of local cuisine prepared by a professional.

In any case, there is a choice of six restaurants in the resort, including among others L’Oasis, which serves international, local or fusion cuisine; the Italian Il Corallo, Mahiya for the lovers of Indian food or the beach restaurant La Plage. There is also a Kids Club, complimentary for children aged three to 11 years old and specially designed for the little ones with its own restaurant, private garden and swimming pool. The Teen Club hosts lots of activities to encourage them to socialise and enjoy their time at Trou aux Biches. Oh! And every day between 3.30pm and 5pm there are pancakes and ice-cream a L’Oasis. That one is a big hit with everyone, from those aged three to those hitting 80.

Families with infants between one and three years of age will be glad to read that there is a complimentary baby care area and free babysitting service from 1p.m. to 4p.m. With the kids thoroughly entertained and well taken care of, the adults can spend some time indulging themselves. I’d most definitely start by paying a visit to the Spa Beachcomber, a spacious and modern setting, to connect with The Art of Wellness. A wooden pathway over cool reflecting ponds leads your steps to the heart of the spa, where you’ll find a beautiful pool bordered on one side by an extensive wooden deck. Comfortable loungers are set in the shade of frangipane trees for guests to relax after their treatment.

There is also an area with thirteen rustic cabins in wood and thatch cleverly linked together by pathways shaded beneath timber pergolas swathed in climbing shrubs. Tucked in tropical greenery, each cabin has an individual door to ensure privacy. This is where guests will go for an authentic commune-with-nature experience. They will enjoy a relaxing massage to the sound of bird calls while a gentle breeze will cool them off. The expert therapists at the spa guide guests on how to fulfil their goals, may those be to improve their vitality, soothe their stress, rejuvenate or regenerate their mind and body, or even boost their performance.

Action junkies like me will find themselves in heaven. From a mega-equipped fitness centre to mountain bikes, beach volley, table tennis, tennis and access to Paradis Golf Club and Mont Choisy Le Golf. The water sports offer is second to none. Apart from water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, etc there is deep-sea fishing and scuba diving. In fact the resort has its own diving centre and academy on site.

Those who favour more chilled activities can indulge in cooking classes, bocciball, pool games… basically it is practically impossible to get bored here. And if you are tempted to explore more of the island, Beachcomber makes it dead easy as guests can move to another of their properties totally hassle-free. I’d also recommend to go for the all-inclusive option. Not only it covers all meals and drinks but an experience per guest is included too.
