Port Ellen 200th Anniversary Edition

Celebrating two centuries of Islay’s most storied distillery

After four decades of silence, the legendary Port Ellen distillery has marked its bicentenary with a release that epitomises everything connoisseurs have missed about this Islay icon. The Port Ellen 200th Anniversary Edition, a magnificent 42-year-old single malt, is not just a celebration but a statement of intent from one of Scotland’s most revered whisky houses.

Distilled in 1983, mere months before the distillery’s closure, this extraordinary expression has spent over four decades maturing in European oak casks, developing the complex character that defines Port Ellen’s legendary status. With only 150 bottles available worldwide, this rare Islay whisky carries the weight of history whilst pointing towards an innovative future.

The whisky presents itself with deep amber gold hues, immediately announcing its maturity and sophistication. On the nose, it delivers the quintessential Port Ellen experience, that masterful marriage of smoke and fruit that has made collectors weep with joy. Wisps of wood smoke dance through the glass, carrying maritime air, whilst underneath, cranberries and red currants mingle with hints of dark brown sugars.

Port Ellen 200th anniversary single malt whisky

Port Ellen 200th anniversary marks the distillery’s return after a 40-year closure, offering one of the last whiskies distilled before
it went silent in 1983. This rare 42-year-old single malt, limited to just 150 bottles, is a highly collectible item.

The palate rewards with fragrant wood smoke and spice, balanced beautifully with caramelising brown sugars and red berries. Master Blender Aimée Morrison has captured “the complexities of smoke mingled with underlying berry flavours, bringing depth and harmony to the whisky.”

The finish is where Port Ellen single malt feels truly special. Smoke climbs gracefully into the distance, leaving traces of black peppercorn and hints of baking brambles.

At £7,500, this limited edition Scotch whisky represents an investment in liquid history, available through the distillery on Islay or via Diageo’s private client team.
