George Bamford and his team make us smile once again with their latest collaboration with King Features, which has resulted in a version of the Bamford London GMT watch which celebrates the famous sailor’s 90th birthday.
Paying homage to Popeye’s story, this delightfully whimsical timepiece features a navy and white colour scheme that commemorates the spinach-eating cartoon character’s time in the Navy, before he joined the Coast Guard in 1937.
The Popeye GMT has all the features of the original Bamford London GMT: self-winding mechanism, 100m water resistance, with a Swiss made automatic Sellita SW330-1 movement and 24-hour GMT hand function, allowing users to set up to three time zones when travelling. The design provides a vibrant splash of cartoon colour on the dial, contrasted against a 316L grade stainless steel case measuring 40mm in diameter and 11.2mm in thickness. Continuing the colour scheme, this piece is available on a navy and white canvas strap.
Continuing with the playfulness behind the watch, the Popeye GMT comes presented in a box with its own tin of spinach, and bubble-style stickers that will delight all comic lovers. To me, it is a small nod to the child that hopefully we all still have within us.
