Hidden Gems at The K Bar London

Cocktails are a girl’s best friend

Prompted by the current Cartier exhibition at the V&A, The K Bar at The Kensington has created a cocktail menu inspired by precious stones, “Hidden Gems”. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and  amethysts are attracting both London residents and guests of the hotel to this award-winning jewel, a favourite among cocktail lovers since it first opened its doors almost a decade ago.

There are many reasons for the success of The K Bar. One could talk about the superb location, a stone throw from many of the London attractions and in the heart of the elegant Kensington & Chelsea borough; or about its fabulous selection of drinks and bites; but what really makes this bar so special is the quality of its people. Manager Adrian González, Head Bartender Jonatan Bou and the rest of the team have created such a professional yet friendly atmosphere that is easy to find yourself lingering far longer than planned. Whether you’re nestled into a plush armchair with a perfectly balanced cocktail or chatting away at the bar as the hours slip by, there’s a comforting sense of belonging here that makes it remarkably easy to stay for hours on end.

Adrian is particularly proud of their latest accolade, a coveted 1 PIN by The Pinnacle Guide, a global award recognising outstanding cocktail bars worldwide, given to only 31 establishments this year. “We are incredibly honoured to be recognised by The Pinnacle Guide,” he told us. “This 1 PIN award is a reflection of our team’s dedication to innovation, storytelling and genuine hospitality – and a reminder that what matters most is how we make people feel.”

“Hidden Gems” at The K Bar: Amethyst, Émeraud, Rubis and Diamant

He is absolutely right. Every detail at The K Bar contributes to the experience. I am always received with a smile from the hostess and offered a complimentary welcome drink while Jonatan mixes and shakes the ingredients that will result in a fabulous cocktail, served in glasses that have been frozen at -22°C.

The first jewel in a glass of the evening is Diamant, Beluga Gold Line vodka with Champagne cordial poured over a striking diamond-shaped ice cube. A delicious take on a martini. My friend opted for an Émeraud, green as the gemstone is named after, put together with Gunpowder Irish gin, pandan leaf, citrus and soda. A refreshing cocktail that finishes with the sweet, nutty flavour of the Southeast Asian plant.

As we were chatting with Jonatan and enjoying a selection of delicious bar bites with our drinks (grilled octopus, duck confit croquettes and chicken katsu sando), Jonatan explained that sustainability is an important factor taken into consideration in everything they do. The K Bar has implemented filtered water systems, zero-waste practices, and is committed to sourcing locally as much as possible.

My two favourite cocktails from the Hidden Gems menu at The K Bar: Diamant, with luxurious Beluga Gold Line vodka and Émeraud, featuring Gunpowder gin from the quintessential emerald Ireland.

Time for our second round. This time is a Rubis for me. La Hechicera Rum from Colombia, Campari, Mancino Rosso and Mango that creates a bold fusion of flavours that evoke the fire of rubies and the superstition that led sorceresses (“hechiceras”) to wear this gemstone as an amulet to ward off evil spirits.

My friend was much more virtuous and chose the non-alcoholic Amethyst (“amethystos” in Greek means “non-intoxicated”). It is prepared with Everleaf Mountain, which has a very aromatic and vibrant profile, earthy butterfly pea flower tea, lime cordial and white peach & jasmine soda. The result is a refreshing drink with a deep purple colour comparable to that of the best amethysts in the world.

It is always a bit of a downer when one looks at the watch and realises it is Cinderella time. So with much regret, we had to say our good-byes, not without receiving an invitation to come back soon from Adrian and his team. I wonder if next weekend would be too soon.
