Located on the riverfront and offering a café, bar, restaurant, lounge, terrace and private dining space, Coppa Putney has been a resounding success since it opened its doors less than a month ago, bringing a distinct café culture experience to Southwest London.
Coppa has a definite private members’ club feel, without any members club fees. This is a place to stay all day, to work or to relax, for a lunch meeting or for a chilled-out dinner with friends. The interior design takes inspiration from the boating heritage in the area, with beautiful blues and greens throughout. The library snug area is filled with decorative bookcases and acts as an all-day workspace, complete with cosy sofas, wooden furnishings, and a welcoming fireplace.
The wood-panelled bar has a certain “Manhattan” feel to it and a drinks menu that would not look out of place in any fashionable bar in the Big Apple. Look for the “Pornstar Martini” or the “Pink Negroni” although maybe my favourite is the “Citrus Paloma” with tequila and agave syrup.
Coppa Putney offers a wide variety of cool cocktails, among them one of my all-time favourites, the Pink Negroni…
The restaurant provides a relaxed atmosphere with low level lighting and is purposefully separated into several sections so that the needs of each guest are met. There is plenty of space for enjoying a group get together as well as for private events. The dining area is set within a conservatory space, with slide-door panelling to let in the fresh air on a sunny summer day. The indoor-outdoor feel of the restaurant is complemented by Coppa’s terrace (great spot to watch the sunset over the Thames) and three riverside glass igloos (you’ll need to book these long in advance). Those who are lucky enough to nab an igloo can order off an exclusive menu, with specials that include truffled wagyu burger and a decadent, warm chocolate fondant with caramelised white chocolate and salted caramel ice cream. Simply divine!
We visited Coppa for dinner on a Wednesday and were immediately surprised by how buzzy it was despite having been opened for just two weeks. The menu is a modern take on British and Mediterranean classics, with favourites such as the Smoked Haddock and Salmon Fish Cake or the Club Caesar Salad. There are also season specials like Parmesan Croquettes and Buckwheat and Rye Pancakes. We chose Devon Crab Salad and Salmon Ceviche as starters. Both deliciously fresh with the latter being a bit of a revelation. As mains we opted for the Sirloin Steak with Chimichurri and the Sea Reared Trout on the Plancha. Both perfectly cooked; the meat juicy and pink inside, the fish moist with very crispy skin.
The Sea Reared Trout on the Plancha with herbed freekah, red onion, parsley, lemon and watercress salad was a real delight…
The wine list is well put together, with many reasonably priced high-quality wines. We went for a bottle of Chilean Pinot Noir (Montes Limited Selection, Aconcagua). Lush and rounded on the palate, its savoury and dried herbs notes complemented my companion’s steak very well as it did my trout (but I belong to the club of “red or dead” so feel free to disagree).
A wide selection of fresh pasta and sourdough pizza is available all day, which makes it the perfect spot for a family lunch over the weekend.
Although by now we were pretty full and ready to call it a day, our wonderful waitress Shakira insisted we couldn’t possibly leave without trying one of their desserts. We shared a sumptuous Sticky Toffee Pudding with crushed honeycomb, which adds a little bit of crunch to the British classic.
It is a shame it was a school night, otherwise we’d have loved to lingered by the bar, enjoying a couple of drinks before going home. As Coppa Club CEO Yishay Malkov put it, “At Coppa Club, we pride ourselves in providing people with a home-from-home experience, where they can work, eat, drink, meet or relax – from first thing in the morning until late at night.” I have no doubts that Coppa will become part of the Putney community in no time.
