Awaken in the Wild

A Transformative Wellness Retreat in Botswana’s Okavango Delta

In an era when wellbeing increasingly means unplugging from the noise of modern life and re-rooting in nature, Botswana’s Okavango Delta emerges as one of the planet’s most spiritually stirring destinations. This November, Desert & Delta Safaris launches the Okavango Awakening Wellness Retreat, a four-night immersive journey that promises not just rejuvenation but awakening.

Held at the secluded Nxamaseri Island Lodge in the heart of the Okavango Panhandle, this exclusive retreat is designed for just ten guests seeking profound reconnection – within themselves, with nature, and through Botswana’s cultural legacy. Led by wellness expert Kerrith O’Fee, the experience weaves yoga, meditation, sound healing, and cultural immersion into one transformative flow. O’Fee, founder of Victoria Falls Yoga, brings both a psychological and spiritual grounding to her practice, making her uniquely suited to guide guests through the delta’s soulful rhythms.

SANCTUARY IN THE DELTA

Nxamaseri Island Lodge is one of the oldest and most loved lodges in the Okavango, nestled among ancient jackalberry trees and palms. Its eight private chalets seem to float above the water, offering rare intimacy with the surrounding wilderness. Mornings begin on the yoga deck overlooking the lagoon – sunrise salutations accompanied by birdsong and the gentle hush of water lapping the island’s edge.

Guests are invited into daily strength and conditioning flows, guided breathwork, and reflective journaling. The lodge’s on-site Wellness Spa, in partnership with Tribal Roots, offers holistic treatments using organic, locally made products crafted by women from neighbouring communities. The focus here is not on fleeting indulgence, but sustainable healing and empowerment.

A SACRED SLEEP-OUT UNDER THE STARS

The retreat reaches its spiritual crescendo with an overnight expedition to the Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as “the Mountains of the Gods.” Guests may choose a scenic helicopter flight over the Okavango or a scenic overland route in Desert & Delta’s luxe new minibus. Either way, the destination stirs the soul: over 4,500 ancient rock paintings, Botswana’s highest peak, and a sky swathed in stars.

Atop Male Hill, the group spends a night in nature’s open cathedral. A traditional trance dance led by local San Bushmen connects guests to one of Africa’s oldest cultural rituals – part ceremony, part prayer, all deeply moving. It’s an invitation to be still, listen, and truly feel the land’s spirit.

THE SPIRIT OF BOTSWANA

More than a luxury escape, the Okavango Awakening Wellness Retreat is part of Desert & Delta’s Epic Experiences collection – a series of curated journeys combining adventure, conservation, and cultural engagement. Alongside this seasonal retreat, guests can explore experiences like the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans Ultra Marathon or join women’s empowerment-focused itineraries. The company’s ethos: “Empowering Botswana through tourism”, runs deep, visible in everything from their community-led spa offerings to the country’s first all-female guiding team.

One of the most extraordinary experiences in the wild: sleeping under the stars on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.

In a world increasingly obsessed with productivity, this retreat offers a rare antidote: spaciousness. Here, time slows. Breath deepens. Nature leads. Whether you’re meditating beneath ancient baobabs, tracing petroglyphs etched by ancestral hands, or simply drifting down the panhandle in a mokoro, the message is clear: renewal is possible, and awakening is closer than we think.
