UR-FREAK: Rewriting the Rules of Horology

Urwerk and Ulysse Nardin Join Forces in the Most Innovative Watch Collaboration to Date

In a sense, it had to happen. Two brands that have developed proprietary and idiosyncratic ways to tell time have found a way to combine their talents. The result is the UR-Freak. It brings together the satellite system of Urwerk with the escapement technology of the Ulysse-Nardin Freak. A completely new and original movement and design.

The genesis stories of both brands read like parallel tracks in watchmaking’s modern renaissance. In 1997, Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei founded Urwerk with a decidedly futuristic interpretation of horology, refusing to merely reinterpret existing complications. Their wandering hours satellite display – inspired by 17th-century Italian horology – became their signature, bending mechanics to reshape our very perception of time.

Four years later, Ulysse Nardin’s maverick-minded Rolf Schnyder unleashed the Dr. Ludwig Oechslin developed Freak upon an unsuspecting Basel Fair crowd. No dial, no hands, no crown – just the entire movement rotating as a carousel to indicate time, with the first-time use of silicon components displayed under the sapphire crystal.

Timeline of the Ulysse Nardin Freak, charting its evolution from the landmark 2001 original to today’s advanced carousel calibres; and of the Urwerk UR-100 lineage, progressing from orbital wandering hours to the bold new UR-Freak of 2025.

That both brands championed independence – understood as creative freedom rather than mere corporate structure – makes this collaboration particularly compelling. For Urwerk, independence meant never compromising their singular vision. For Ulysse Nardin, it manifested as the freedom to pursue whatever technical projects they chose, including pioneering silicon technology to counteract magnetism.

The UR-Freak goes beyond just a cosmetic synthesis of styles. Over 150 entirely new components were developed to create this combination of time displays. The result is the calibre UN-241, based on the GPHG-winning Freak ONE movement but reimagined to accommodate Urwerk’s wandering hours satellite display. Time is indicated by one of three connected hands sliding along the minute scale, each carrying a domed disc displaying the jumping hour. Once a hand completes its 60-minute journey, the next takes over – the entire satellite system completing a full rotation every three hours whilst functioning as a carousel for improved timekeeping precision.

The front of the UR-Freak shows its unique satellite and carousel system of telling time. Each satellite carries a pointer that travels along a 60-minute scale in an arc. The proprietary Ulysse Nardin Grinder winding system is visible through the caseback.

At the movement’s heart sits an oversized silicon balance wheel and escapement assembly, treated with Ulysse Nardin’s proprietary DIAMonSil (diamond-coated silicon) that addresses the material’s brittle nature. The automatic winding employs the revolutionary Grinder system, converting even minimal wrist movements into kinetic energy with unprecedented efficiency. It’s a 90-hour power reserve packaged into 44mm of sandblasted titanium, rendered in Urwerk’s signature deep anthracite grey and accented by their emblematic electric yellow.

The case architecture speaks volumes about this collaboration’s authenticity. Urwerk’s fluted bezel sections and distinctive locker mechanism at six o’clock (labelled ‘UR-Freak’ for this edition) combine with the Freak’s traditional crown-less design. Time adjustment occurs via the turning bezel; manual winding through the caseback. It’s simultaneously unmistakably Urwerk and undeniably Freak.

Limited to 100 pieces, the UR-Freak represents something increasingly rare in luxury watchmaking: a genuine technical collaboration between equals, each bringing their considerable expertise to create something neither could achieve alone.
