His Dark Materials: Fréderique Constant x Bamford Highlife Chronograph Automatic

Stealth, Precision and Bold Attitude from ‘The Custom King’

When it comes to cultural disruptors turned doyens, George Bamford – creator, along with Geneva-based manufacture Frederique Constant, of the Highlife Chronograph before you – is in good company. Bob Dylan’s journey from scruffy countercultural prophet to Nobel Prize-winning presidential honouree springs to mind, as does Banksy’s stealthy rise from urban fugitive to the Sotheby’s lot sheets.

Now, the former maverick customiser of luxury timepieces – gradually embraced into the premium watchmaking fold ever since he first applied a DLC coating to the Rolex Daytona his parents gave him for his 18th birthday – has added Frederique Constant to a roster of major collaborators that already includes Chopard, Franck Muller, Girard-Perregaux, Tag Heuer, Zenith and Bremont, applying his distinctive monochromatic aesthetic to the Highlife Chronograph recently unveiled at Dubai Watch Week.

The 41mm Frederique Constant x Bamford Highlife Chronograph is the latest iteration of an integrated-bracelet chronograph line that debuted in 1999 and, following its revival in 2020, has become Frederique Constant’s modern sport-luxe statement piece.

Its beating heart – the FC-391 calibre, boasting a 60-hour power reserve, decorated with a Côtes de Genève finish and visible via a smoked sapphire crystal caseback – is made by La Joux-Perret. Bamford has been given carte blanche (or “carte noire”, as the press materials quip) to push the aesthetics into darker, punchier territory. The case is crafted in Grade 2 titanium, subjected to a crystallisation heat treatment at 1,200°C before receiving a black DLC finish.

A masterclass in Bamford minimalism: a matte-black dial, crisp tri-compax symmetry, and just the right hit of turquoise. Clean, balanced, and disarmingly uncluttered.

The absolute matte-black dial carries splashes of turquoise around the circumference, on the sub-dials and on the small-seconds hand (some owners will be tempted to leave the chronograph running just to enjoy its sweeping choreography at every glance). The display is again framed in sapphire crystal – this time a convex window treated with anti-reflective coating.

The overall effect is imperiously stealthy and, the creators hope, suited to multiple environments. Accordingly, three straps – black rubber, turquoise rubber and black nubuck calfskin – are supplied.

“George and his team are recognised as bold and free-spirited creatives,” says Frederique Constant CEO Niels Eggerding of the release. “We wanted to get out of our comfort zone, and Bamford Watch Department have proved to be the perfect ally to shake us up, delivering a Highlife variant that will defy our customers’ expectations.”

Bamford agrees, adding: “This isn’t a facelift. It’s a liberation. A Highlife that’s broken free from tradition to become darker, sharper, and completely reprogrammed.”

The Fréderique Constant x Bamford Highlife Chronograph Automatic is limited to 100 pieces and priced at £3,995.
