Bürgenstock: Wellness Above the Clouds

Taking Wellness to New Heights

Set 500 metres above Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock wellness resort occupies a 60-hectare mountain estate reached by electric catamaran and historic funicular. By the time guests arrive on Bürgenberg mountain, Lucerne feels distant: the air is cooler, the horizon wider and the pace much slower.

At the centre of the resort is the Bürgenstock Alpine Spa, a 10,000-square-metre complex arranged over three levels and wrapped in glass. Its most photographed feature is the heated outdoor infinity pool, kept at around 35°C and suspended above the lake as if by magic, with views towards Pilatus and Rigi, two of the mountain landmarks of the Lake Lucerne landscape

The pool is only the appetizer. The scale behind it will leave you breathless. There are five pools, four saunas, 13 treatment rooms, hot and cold Kneipp baths, a herbal steam room, an ice room, nap shells, saline bathing, silent relaxation spaces and private spa suites. In 2025, Bürgenstock became the first recipient of the Michelin Wellness Award and retained its three Michelin Keys, which it also achieved this year.

The best way to experience Bürgenstock’s spa is to follow its natural sequence. Three self-guided hydrothermal journeys – Relax, Regenerate and Activate – combine heat, cold, water and rest in different orders, lasting from 60 to 130 minutes. A circuit might begin with sauna heat, move to a cold plunge, continue in a vitality pool and end with stillness. The colder elements require some courage, but they are manageable: the eco pool is roughly 10–14°C, while the cold plunge is around 16°C.

The Bürgenberg mountain adds to the benefits of the spa. In popular culture, it is considered a “Kraftort”, a place of natural power, and therefore conducive to chakra balancing, recharging personal energy fields, and amplifying meditation.

Scientifically, the crashing of weather and wind against the sheer limestone cliffs and the lake produces a high concentration of negative ions, which are proved to improve mood and respiratory function. On the other hand, the pristine, high-altitude air and total lack of urban noise lower physiological stress indicators like cortisol and heart rate.

The treatment menu is broad, but several experiences stand out. AMRA’s Pure Rarity Body Ritual was created exclusively for the Alpine Spa and is Bürgenstock at its most extravagant. The treatment uses ruby, sapphire, orchid stem cell and meteorite actives before finishing with a bespoke 24-karat gold hot stone massage. AMRA’s wider range works with pearl, caviar, gold, diamond and platinum.

For more results-led facial work, the current line-up is particularly strong. The 60-minute 111SKIN facial, featured in the resort’s Alpine Spa & Glow experience, combines cleansing, extraction, exfoliation and a firming massage. Dr Burgener, meanwhile, offers personalised Swiss facials using advanced technology and active ingredients that leaves the skin glowing and visible firmer and plumper for days.

The newest addition is myBlend, introduced at Bürgenstock in late 2025. Founded by Dr Olivier Courtin, the brand combines concentrated formulas with LED light therapy and an approach informed by epigenetics. Treatments including the Restorative Glow Facial and Complete Glow Facial pair targeted massage with an LED mask intended to support elasticity, soften the appearance of fine lines and boost radiance. It is a natural fit for a spa balancing traditional bathing culture with high-performance beauty technology.

Those seeking something more classical should look to the 60-minute KOS Paris Full Body Massage, which forms part of the resort’s Rejuvenation Spa Day alongside a 60-minute Dr Burgener facial. KOS draws on nature-led formulations and rare ingredients, providing a gentler counterpoint to the technology-led facials. Private saline bathing is another worthwhile option for couples or anyone craving complete quiet, followed by rest in the same room overlooking the landscape.

Bürgenstock has always understood the art of escape. Audrey Hepburn married Mel Ferrer in the resort’s chapel and Sophia Loren was a regular guest. Today, however, its appeal lies mainly in how well it combines its stunning natural setting with the most advanced wellness therapies and treatments in the market.
