As the daughter of Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, and the protagonist of copious international brand campaigns, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Scarlett Jagger is synonymous with fame. However, her rock royalty status and jet-setting career (model, activist, global ambassador) hasn’t distracted her from one particular passion: advocating for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. In this interview with Julia Pasarón, Lizzy speaks ardently about the cause, sharing what – and who – is preventing it from being ratified by Congress
At just 14, Lizzy made her runway debut with her mum, walking for the Thierry Mugler show. That same year – 1998 – she was on the catwalk at London Fashion Week for Vivienne Westwood.
By the early noughties, her modelling career had gained significant momentum, with high-profile beauty (Lancôme) and fashion (Tommy Hilfiger) campaigns, plus regular runway appearances (Matthew Williamson, Sonia Rykiel, Gap, Mango) cementing her status as bona fide rock royalty. “I never thought of my life as that of a famous person,” she reflects. “It was just my life, my family. It was my normal. It is more other people who think about those things.”
It was around this time that Lizzy started to show an increased interest in ecology and the environment, frequently using her platform to promote eco-friendly fashion, such as the sustainable denim brand DL1961, which focuses on reducing water and energy waste.
Advocating for human rights, and particularly equal rights, was what eventually stole her heart, though. “In my twenties I [became] very interested in human rights and how they could have a positive effect on nature,” she says.
However, as her commitment strengthened, Lizzy realised that not everybody was as invested. “The fight for equality can be disheartening,” she admits. “When I started Instagramming about it, I lost hundreds of thousands of followers, as people are just not interested in these important issues – they only want to see pretty pictures. On occasions, it made me feel like a bit of an outcast.” […]
