Coq d’Argent

French Classics Above the City Skyline

Perched above No.1 Poultry, Coq d’Argent has long held one of the most enviable positions in the City, with sweeping views over the Bank of England and the surrounding skyline. It operates year-round as a destination in its own right, thanks to its heated terraces, manicured rooftop garden and lively bar, all anchored by a French restaurant that leans into tradition with a light contemporary hand. Under the direction of Chef Damien Rigollet, the kitchen offers classic French dishes with a modern touch in a setting that shifts easily from long lunches to late dinners, from relaxed cocktails to celebratory Champagne moments.

The terrace, in particular, sets the tone, with an easy rhythm that suits both business lunches and unhurried evenings. A concise Spritz menu, with evocative names such as Golden Hour and Lillet Rosé, feels perfectly attuned to the season, while the asparagus tasting menu shows a commendable willingness to take a humble ingredient to new heights of creativity and care.

Summer terrace Coq d'Argent

Running from May through September, the Sunset Sessions at Coq d’Argent ease the terrace
from day into evening with music, cocktails and some of the best views in London.

We began with Crabe, a neatly composed salad of Devon white crab and pearl couscous, with avocado and a gentle heat from espelette. Served in a crab-shaped metal bowl that keeps it cool, this is a vibrant and luxurious summer starter that delivers in both flavour and freshness.. Alongside it, classic Escargots de Bourgogne, which arrive exactly as they should: tender, succulent and richly coated in garlic and parsley butter.

For mains, I opted for the Tarte au Comté, which is heaven on a plate for any cheese lover. A quiche-style tart layered with nutty cheese, softened by leek compote and sharpened with Granny Smith and lamb’s lettuce. A black truffle dressing adds a final note of decadence. My guest chose the Terre et Mer, a saffron-laced risotto bringing together pork belly, grilled octopus and chorizo with spring vegetables. It is a generous, well-judged combination, with the richness of the meat kept in check by the brightness of the seafood and spice.

L-R: Devon Crab salad with pearl couscous with avocado and espelette; Terre et Mer, saffron risotto
with pork belly, octopus and chorizo; and lemon parfait with meringue and sorbet.

We paired the meal with a bottle of 2023 Saumur-Champigny Vieilles Vignes. This Cabernet Franc shines in summer with its bright acidity, refined tannins, and fresh red fruit notes, which bridge the gap between seafood and cheese and meat. I recommend it slightly chilled.

Dessert proved irresistible: a lemon parfait, with meringue and sorbet. The perfect choice to finish our email with a bit of indulgence and no guilt whatsoever.
