Fascinating Egypt by Van Cleef & Arpels

A Journey Through Gold, Myth and Memory

Ancient Egypt is a a civilisation of power, colour and afterlife. Its symbols still seem to speak to us millennia later. With Fascinating Egypt, Van Cleef & Arpels enters the language of the Nile Empire with confidence, creating a high jewellery collection that asks why the style of the Pharaonic empire continues to hold us so tightly.

Comprising around 180 pieces, the collection revisits the Maison’s long relationship with Egypt, from its Egyptian Pattern jewels of the 1920s to royal commissions for Queen Nazli and Princess Fawzia. This history gives Fascinating Egypt a real sense of continuity. The collection arrives as the latest chapter in a conversation Van Cleef & Arpels has been having for more than a century.

The timing of that original conversation was significant. After Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, Europe fell once again under Egypt’s spell. Art Deco found in ancient Egypt a perfect companion: geometry, symmetry, sharp colour, gold, lapis, onyx, emerald and ruby. Van Cleef & Arpels absorbed that visual vocabulary early and here, it returns with a broader, more contemporary imagination.

L-R: Van Cleef & Arpels Fascinating Egypt clips – Bénou Mystériux in white, rose and yellow gold with one pear-shaped DIF diamond (2.63cts), one oval-cut spessartite garnet (4.08cts); Fleur de Lotus Mystérieuse in rose and yellow gold, with rubies in Traditional Mystery Set, baguette-cut rubies and diamonds; Vénus Égyptienne in yellow and white gold with one round DVVS1 diamond (1.51cts), lapis lazuli, turquoise and diamonds.

The strongest pieces are those that understand Egyptian symbolism as more than ornament. The Bénou Mystérieux clip, inspired by the bird associated with the sun and rebirth, becomes a small act of radiance in itself, alive with spessartite garnet, spinel, turquoise, lapis lazuli and Mystery Set emeralds. The Vénus égyptienne clip evokes Hathor, goddess of love, beauty and music, through a sun disk, cow horns, falcons, turquoise and lapis, transforming mythology into a precise and luminous object. Elsewhere, lotus flowers, scarabs, papyrus, wings and cartouches remind us that ancient Egyptian jewellery was never simply decorative. It protected, declared, remembered and transformed.

L-R: Collaret (1929) set in platinum with emeralds and diamonds. Formerly in the collection of Her Royal Highness Princess Faiza of Egypt; Princesse du Nil necklace with detachable back motif set in white and yellow gold abd platinum wutg 10 Colombian emerald
drops (107.37cts), seven white natural pearls (85.13cts) and diamonds.

This is where the collection is most persuasive. Van Cleef & Arpels is not at its best when it simply illustrates Egypt, but when it translates its atmosphere: the cool density of lapis lazuli, the solar warmth of yellow gold, the green pulse of emeralds, the theatrical authority of symmetry. The Princesse du Nil necklace, with emerald drops and natural pearls, speaks to the splendour of royal adornment, while the Paysage bracelets bring a more playful, almost cinematic energy, turning the wrist into a miniature fresco.

There is, inevitably, a risk with any Egypt-inspired collection: grandeur can become cliché. Yet Fascinating Egypt largely avoids this by balancing spectacle with scholarship, and fantasy with craft. Its triumph is not that it recreates ancient Egypt, but that it reminds us why Egypt keeps returning to the imagination. In Van Cleef & Arpels’ hands, the Nile is not only a river of history. It is a current of colour, myth and desire.
